Paying for Child Care
In 28 states, including North Carolina, child care can cost more than college tuition. To alleviate some of the burden of that cost for working parents or parents training for employment, there is a Child Care Subsidy Program.
In Randolph County, this program is partially funded through Smart Start dollars and operated by Randolph County Department of Social Services. A subsidy voucher can be used at licensed child care centers and family child care homes, approved non-licensed homes, and approved religious sponsored programs that are currently under contract with Randolph County Department of Social Services.
Because there are many more families eligible for child care subsidy than there are funds for vouchers, a waiting list is maintained by Randolph County Department of Social Services.
Cost
Participating parents are responsible for paying a fee of 10% of the cost of child care.
